Anything Goes

Anything Goes is a dazzling musical comedy set aboard a 1930s ocean liner, where romance, mistaken identities, and wild antics collide on the high seas. Featuring a colourful cast of characters and Cole Porter’s legendary songs, including “You’re the Top”, “I Get a Kick Out of You”, and the show-stopping title number, this timeless classic delivers high-energy dance, witty humour, and non-stop entertainment.

Anything Goes

Anything Goes is a much-loved musical theatre classic that first premiered on Broadway in 1934. With music and lyrics by the legendary Cole Porter and a book originally written by Guy Bolton and P. G. Wodehouse, later revised by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, the show has become one of the most frequently revived musicals in theatre history. Known for its witty lyrics, catchy tunes, and joyful spirit, Anything Goes remains a staple of both professional and amateur productions across the world.

Set aboard the luxurious ocean liner S.S. American, the story follows the hilarious chaos that ensues during a transatlantic voyage from New York to London. Central to the plot is Reno Sweeney, a glamorous nightclub singer and former evangelist, who finds herself entangled in a web of romantic confusion, mistaken identity, and farcical twists. Stowaway Billy Crocker sneaks on board to win back his love, debutante Hope Harcourt, who is engaged to the wealthy and eccentric Lord Evelyn Oakleigh. Adding to the madcap atmosphere is Moonface Martin, a gangster posing as a priest, who brings his own brand of comic disruption to the journey.

The musical is famous for its unforgettable score, penned by Cole Porter at the height of his career. Featuring standards such as “Anything Goes”, “I Get a Kick Out of You”, “You’re the Top”, “Blow, Gabriel, Blow” and “It’s De-Lovely”, the show has produced some of the most iconic songs in the American musical theatre canon. Porter’s clever wordplay, catchy melodies, and rhythmic ingenuity continue to resonate with audiences nearly a century later.

Anything Goes has enjoyed numerous revivals and adaptations, each breathing new life into the production while remaining faithful to its golden-age charm. The 1987 Broadway revival, starring Patti LuPone, introduced a revised book by Timothy Crouse (son of original co-writer Russel Crouse) and John Weidman. This version has since become the most commonly performed version of the show. In 2011, the show returned to Broadway starring Sutton Foster and Joel Grey, winning several Tony Awards including Best Revival of a Musical. A highly successful 2021 London production at the Barbican Theatre brought the show back into the spotlight once more, with Sutton Foster reprising her role as Reno Sweeney alongside Robert Lindsay.

Audiences are continually drawn to Anything Goes for its exuberant choreography, charming characters, and infectious energy. Its story of love, adventure, and self-discovery appeals across generations, while its blend of humour, heart and spectacle ensures an unforgettable theatre experience.

Whether you’re a seasoned theatregoer or discovering musical theatre for the first time, Anything Goes offers a joyful escape into a world of romance, rhythm, and rollicking good fun. With its timeless music and high-spirited plot, it is no surprise that Anything Goes continues to be staged around the globe – proving that when it comes to classic musical theatre, anything truly goes.
