SuperYou

“SuperYou” is an empowering new musical that chronicles the transformative journey of Katie, a comic book artist who discovers self-love and finds her voice when her superheroine creations come to life. With a dynamic rock soundtrack that seamlessly incorporates a wide range of musical styles—including pop, hip-hop, swing, blues, gospel, country, and soulful power ballads—this production offers an electrifying theatrical experience.

The narrative centers on Katie, a shy and isolated woman who, as a child, created superheroine characters as a means of coping with life’s challenges. These creations embody the strength and confidence she yearns for. As an adult, Katie’s superheroes come to life, guiding her on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment. Through this fantastical premise, “SuperYou” explores themes of self-worth, resilience, and the power of embracing one’s unique qualities.

“SuperYou” has undergone a remarkable evolution since its inception. Initially scheduled for an off-Broadway run in May 2020, the production faced unforeseen challenges due to the global pandemic. Demonstrating resilience, the creative team adapted by staging a concert version on the back of pickup trucks at the Four Brothers Drive-In in Amenia, New York, in June 2020. This innovative approach allowed the show to safely perform live during a time when traditional theater venues were inaccessible.

In 2022, “SuperYou” gained further recognition with two sold-out concerts at Carnegie Hall. The following year, in November 2023, the musical made its West End debut in a concert version at the Lyric Theatre in London. These performances showcased the show’s broad appeal and its ability to resonate with diverse audiences.

The first fully staged UK production took place at Leicester’s Curve Theatre from October 22 to November 9, 2024. Directed and choreographed by JoAnn M. Hunter, the production featured Vicki Manser as Katie and Lourds Lane, the show’s creator, reprising her role as Rise. The cast also included Aaliyah Monk as Young Katie and Lightning Girl, Will Bozier as Mi Roar, Kingsley Morton as Ima-Mazing, Courtney Stapleton as Blast, B. Noel Thomas as Seven, Damien Walsh as Jay, Owen Lloyd as Matty, and Belinda Lee Chapman as Mom.

“SuperYou” boasts a distinguished creative team led by Lourds Lane, who serves as the book writer, composer, and lyricist. JoAnn M. Hunter brings her extensive experience to the production as director and choreographer. The musical supervision and arrangements are handled by Wendy Bobbitt Cavett, known for her work on productions like “Come From Away” and “Hamilton.” The set design is crafted by Tony-nominated Anna Louizos, whose credits include “In The Heights” and “School of Rock.” Costume design is by Cynthia Nordstrom, with sound design by Tony Gayle, lighting design by Ryan O’Gara, and projection design by Caite Hevner.

“SuperYou” has garnered attention for its high-energy performances and powerful musical numbers. Reviews have highlighted the show’s vibrant score and the cast’s dynamic portrayals. However, some critiques have pointed to areas where the narrative could be further developed to enhance character depth and plot coherence. Despite these observations, the musical’s core message of self-empowerment and inclusivity continues to resonate with audiences.

“SuperYou” stands as a testament to the resilience and creativity of the theater community. Through its innovative storytelling and diverse musical styles, it offers audiences an inspiring narrative that champions self-discovery and the celebration of one’s inner superhero. As the production continues to evolve, it holds the promise of becoming a cherished addition to the musical theater landscape.
